Job Title: Mechanical Subject Matter Expert (SME) - European Hyperscale Data Centres

Client: Confidential - Market-Leading Data Centre Developer

Location: London (with flexible hybrid working)

Salary: Up to £120k + Excellent Bonus Scheme + Comprehensive Package

About The Company

I am representing a market-leading developer and operator of next-generation, sustainable hyperscale data centres across Europe. They build the critical infrastructure that powers the world's largest technology brands. Their success is built on engineering excellence and, most importantly, their people.

Culture is key for them. They have built a non-bureaucratic, fast-paced, and highly collaborative environment. They hire brilliant, passionate people and give them the autonomy and support to do their best work. If you are tired of red tape and want to make a tangible impact, this is the place for you.

The Role

Mechanical Subject Matter Expert (SME) to join their London-based technical design team.

This is a strategic, client-side role, not a detailed design position. You will be the ultimate technical authority for all mechanical systems across their portfolio of hyperscale projects. You will own their design standards, drive innovation in cooling, and provide expert oversight from concept to commissioning.

You will be the engineering conscience of the business, ensuring their facilities are best-in-class for resilience, efficiency (PUE), and sustainability.

Responsibilities

  • Technical Governance: Act as the final technical sign-off for all mechanical designs (chilled water, adiabatic, liquid cooling, HVAC) submitted by their consultant partners.
  • Standards Development: Develop, own, and continuously improve their Owner's Project Requirements (OPR) and global mechanical design standards.
  • Innovation & R&D: Lead research into emerging technologies—such as advanced liquid cooling, heat re-use, and waterless cooling—to keep their designs at the cutting edge.
  • Project Lifecycle Oversight: Provide expert technical support to their development, construction, and commissioning teams, acting as the primary escalation point for complex mechanical challenges.
  • Quality Control: Review submittals, witness key factory (FAT) and site (SAT/IST) testing, and ensure their built product meets your exacting standards.
  • Mentorship: Guide and mentor other engineers within the technical team, fostering a culture of engineering excellence.

Qualifications & Experience

This role is ideal for a senior mechanical engineer who wants to move client-side and set the strategy, rather than execute the design. Sponsorship opportunities not available for this role due to security clearance.

Must-Haves:

  • Significant data centre experience is essential. You must have a proven track record of working on large-scale, complex mission-critical projects (ideally hyperscale or large co-location).
  • Deep technical expertise in a wide range of critical cooling systems, building management systems (BMS), and mechanical controls.
  • Experience in a client-side (owner/developer) or a lead/principal role at an engineering consultancy.
  • A collaborative, low-ego, and team-oriented mindset. Your ability to communicate and work within their culture is as important as your technical skill.
  • Must be based in or able to easily commute to their London office for key meetings and collaboration days.
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status (or actively working towards it).

Nice-to-Haves:

  • Hands-on commissioning (IST) experience.
  • A strong understanding of data centre sustainability, PUE, and WUE metrics.

How to Apply

If you are a mechanical expert passionate about data centre innovation and want to be part of a company where culture comes first, I want to hear from you.

This is an urgent requirement, and interviews are being scheduled immediately. Please apply with your CV for a confidential discussion.
